Are you mistrustful? We try to help you on this!

1. I am not a computer expert, but I have already used word processor or spreadsheet.

We describe in a few steps what to do. If you find it too complicated or if you need a more comfortable solution then please check what we offer for people Type 2.

The extension of my bank account statement is

  • a, TXT/CSV

    +

     1. If the extension is TXT or CSV then open the file in Windows Notepad.
    2. Choose Edit/Replace function in menu, and type the string to be replaced to 'Find what',
    3. then type your fake name to 'Replace with' (please choose as long fake name as the original was, e.g. 'Smith' instead of 'Jones').
    4. Repeat these steps, if your account statemnt contains your address, account number, etc. (please be aware of same length!). Usually it is enough to replace your family name or the name of the street in your address.
    5. Please save the modified statement (with new name or into another directory, where you can find it later, like My Documents or the Desktop)
    6. If the filename contains your account number then it is recommended to rename it, too. Please keep your original exported file, as some of the banks do not allow to retrieve data before a certain period.
    7. During the import process please upload only this modified file into contoroll.com.

  • b, XLS/XLSX

    +

     1. If the extension is XLS or XLSX then open the file in Microsoft Excel
    2. Press CTRL+H or choose Edit/Replace function in menu, and type the string to be replaced to 'Find what',
    3. then type your fake name to 'Replace with' (please choose as long fake name as the original was, e.g.

  • c, HTM/HTML

    +

We experienced that some of HTML files are "real" HTML format, while others are not. Open your file with Windows Notepad. If you can see HTML characters somewhere in the beginning, then this is a "real" HTML, please follow the steps described in a, TXT/CSV method. Otherwise the file is probably an Excel sheet, in this case follow the instructions described in b, XLS/XLSX method.

  • d, XPS

    +

XPS is a file format describing a print preview, in which there are some readable words. Sometimes these string parts cannot be found like we see them on the preview (i.e. adjacent words can be found in XPS file far from each other).

This is why we recommend you to try the steps described in a, TXT/CSV method, take special care of AMENDING LONELY WORDS (i.e. do not amend your full name or full address, just your family name or streetname, only last 8 digits of your account number, etc.), otherwise not all of the expressions will be replaced!

  • e, other extension

    +

If your statement is of another extension then please create a file which contains only a couple of transactions (and does not contain private data), send it to us and we will check what we can do for you.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

Do not amend anything else in the file (do not delete transactions or whole rows or headers)! If you cannot import the modified file please start modifications again from the beginning!

Tip: If you remember the pairs of replaced and new words then you can search for these new ones in contoroll.com later (i.e. if you want to search for the transactions with your partner named Jones you have to search for Smith).

If you know someone who has good computer skills and you can trust him then please show contoroll.com to him and ask him about his opininon regarding possible risks.
